I see this trend on vBulletin forums a lot too, though. They play with the color scheme and call it a day. One of my challenges is going to be to make the homepage more inviting. I really like the usability of it, but I worry the discussion list looks too cold and I want people to see my community as very inviting even at first blush.

Also, I think the makezine forum is one of the largest I've seen so far, with ~4,000 discussions. The forum I'm looking to migrate is approaching 76,000 discussions so I'll be keenly interested in how the findability of discussions scales and how easy it is to keep track of discussions when we have more active threads in a day than appear on the homepage. Some interesting challenges but I'm not overly worried about them.

I'm going to take some of the usability lessons I've taken from the V2 default and create a new design from scatch, and then craft the theme with any necessary plugins to match the vision rather than incrementally inching away from the default.
