That's not a bad idea. I used to make my banner title (on the settings tab / application settings form) a hyperlink to the discussion index. That then applies to the login screens as well, so you can always click back there...
Alternately you can just create a new theme and copy the template file you want to change into your new theme and make it do whatever you want....
