forums crashed and can't re-install

We installed vanilla last June (2006) and in recent months, the site had been choking up. Server loads were fine and server config was optimal, but the database was 137mb big. Is that normal? Seems large. Then we ran out of disk space and the forums crashed. We added more disk space, but the forums were still down.
