Large Vanilla Sites

edited March 2010 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8
As a part of my considering adopting Vanilla, can anybody give sample URL's of Vanilla sites that are "large", meaning lots of content, lots of users, high traffic, etc.

Thanks in advance.

  • Good question. I want to know this too. I once had a forum running vbulletin and it grew to 5 million posts and was still going reasonably fast.
  • You might find http://www.big-boards.com/ interesting. Someone pointed it out to me. I don't see Vanilla listed at all. Nor Zoho which is another one I'm looking at. vBulletin is all over the place - indicating that it can handle the biggest forum sites.

I'm very new to forum products in general, but I don't get the impression that Vanilla is the most highly scalable product. Just an opinion at this point.
  • What would suggest that vanilla isn't a scalable product? Have you seen some of the coding of vbulletin, i admit i haven't seen vanilla forums as big as vbulletin, but that doesn't mean the software doesn't scale.

However i think vanilla fulfills a different niche anyway, i don't think the categorization would suffice for a larger forum and i can imagine a lot of discussions just being thrown off the end of the first page almost immediately. However your welcome to prove me wrong, just a feeling really.

Before the most recent revision of the firefox addons site, Vanilla 1 was used as the discussion tool for addons for Firefox.

Despite this fact, Vanilla 1 didn't scale well. Vanilla 2, on the other hand, handles load much better. We're working on making core changes so it can handle extremely large sites. We're also working with some partners on doing big implementations. We'll be showing these on the homepages after they're up :)
  • @mark I haven't been able to find many examples concerning the scalability of Vanilla 2. I've read vanillaforums.org/discussion/5168/scaling-load-balancing and you seem to be the person around here to ask about these things... so here is my question:

Currently we are running a customized (and somewhat dated) version of IPBoard 3. We have off the top of my head over 600k registered users, 62 forums, 300k topics, and 15 million posts. At peak times we will have over 10k users on the forums.

Are there any Vanilla 2 forums running at this size? Hosted or not? Also if we go the hosted route, is any data migration help provided?

It seems Zoho.com and Vanilla are really similar! am I right?
