Firefox is pissing me off...

edited September 2005 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Ever since a few days ago, every one in awhile at random points during me browsing, it will start using 99% CPU and become unresponsive. I have to manually shut it down every time. I've reinstalled it and everything. What is the deal?

  • if you mean in the past 2 versions of 1.0.6 and 1.0.7, then yeah, i've seen it crash a bit too. Nothing too terrible with 99% cpu usage, but it just locks up from time to time. I presume some bugs have snuck back in.

my firefox has been bugging me for a while as well. I assume it has to do with all of the plugins I've got going. But I love my plugins, so I don't want to remove them...
  • Have you tried making a new profile? Just a uninstall/reinstall doesnt make a new profile I dont believe... a new profile every once in a while, solves a lot of issues. Just back up the important things (your bookmarks). Use the MozBackUp utility thing...its great. Maybe some of your plugins (or a theme) are conflicting with each other? Run it in SafeMode and see if it still does that. You running the newest? 1.0.7? And the newest versions of your plugins?
  • I am running 1.0.7. And when I reinstalled, I totally deleted the Firefox folder before installing again...but its still doing this to me...
  • The profiles are not stored in the C:\Program Files\... dir, I am assuming thats the folder you said you deleted?
  • firefox used to do this more often than it is now. i agree with mark, i love my plugins too much.
  • Profiles get goobered after a while, expecially when you use a lot of plugins.

it's in the profiles directory which should look something like:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Master\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

I usually back everything up and replace it manually and it seems to do the trick, password files anyway. And like Krak said, it's likely the result of some extension conflict/misfire that causes the hang from time to time. While I have several extensions loaded, I only have a few of them active, yet on occasion with all of them disabled it will still cause a hang now and then.

I noticed a while back, if you disable your cache (don't ask why I did) and have firefox load everything to memory, you're asking for a boatload of problems if you try anything fancy. Not to mention some other oddities when you load sites. Thus leading to more frequent crashes.
