Navigating the Filesystem

So...I am brand new to the world of php and installing vanilla. I got to the point of the install where I have to change some permissions and it tells me to navigate the file system. Problem is I don't know how to do that. What program do I use? What do I type in? thanks for the help. Patience for the newbie please

    Did you upload Vanilla via FTP? Take a look in the documentation for your FTP client for how to CHMOD or set permissions. It's normally the case of selecting files/folders, right-clicking and selecting 'CHMOD' (or 'permissions').
