can you search users for additional profile fields?

If I add a predefined attribute such as location or postcode (postcodes in Germany are numeric by region), can I either list users according to those attributes or search these attributes. That way users could find other users near to them. What would be the search syntax?

    I'm pretty sure with the current search thing it's not possible. I guess you could write an extension to do it - it's a pretty simple mysql query - but dont expect the searches to be lightening fast.
