New extensions do not show up?

I've successfully installed extensions in the past, however since just recently whenever I install an extension it does not show up in the extension list so I can't activate it. There is no error output, so I am slightly confused... Does anybody know why this could be?

    maybe new uploaded files/folders in your extension dir aren't readable anymore?

    They're chmod 755...

    maybe one of the extensions you've activated messes up your extension page... try to deactivate the last extension you enabled by removing it from the conf/settings.php
