What does it do? I'm reluctant to experimant for fear I won't be able to undo it.

    Oh, your question reminds me that BM is quite a good feature. Just try ....

    It just puts a [Bookmarked] tag next to a discussion (for yourself only) and means you can find them easily in the Bookmarked Discussions filter. Totally reversible :) I quite often bookmark stuff then forget to look at it later though :(
