Notification without user visiting site?

Hi all, ive seen many commenst relating to this so spologies for posting again, but I simply want to know if there is anyway I can have it so users are mailed with a notification whenever a post is made on the forum theyre a member of? To begin with it sounded like a nice idea that users wouldnt be bombarded with emails, but after lots of use it seems like a big barrier to user retention because its easy to forget the forum exists and not all users know about, or want to use RSS... Thanks in advance

    I think this is what I tried yes, in the features description it says "Every user won't get more than one mail, until he visits the forum again." I would prefer it if all forum members did receive a notification everytime a comment was posted without having to visit the forum again. I would want the mail notification to be a reason members return to the site. Working the way it does seems to only be of use if you already have a stable community, not the best for starting one... Any ideas?

    But I personally wouldn't want umpteen emails flooding in telling me that comments have been posted all over the place.

    Established community or otherwise, every notification system on every forum I've been involved in works this way.

    If it worked on an opt in basis (per discussion), then it could be useful I guess... that way it wouldn't be massive overkill immediately for people. Of course, you'd need somewhere to manage your "discussion subscriptions" in the user area as well...

    How about a 'daily digest' email being sent out? Basically, listing all the new discussions & discussions with new comments listed in an email with a linkback to the site.

    Perhaps this form of email could be made optional. Two little buttons in the panel saying 'Digest this board'.image

    I just noticed, Vanilla hasnt got anything like the other boards where it says 'You can X unread messages'. Then a link to a filtered page displaying only unread emails.

    From then either the user can go through them or if he decides to leave the page or something the notice goes away.

    Ooooooo, I like that, only I'd use nested lists (and line stuff up!), as that's exactly what they're there for and will look much nicer :D

    for now, you could mirror your RSS feed at feedburner and then provide email subscriptions to the feed.
