I haven't had time to research it but I noticed that there's a file created in the cache directory for the activated plugins, so perhaps some content can be derived from that file and added to the individual plugins... Again, just an unresearched notion.
The path is correct. Are you sure that your css selector was correct? Maybe do something dramatical and replace the complete content of a file with something like div {border: 5px solid green} to ensure that the problem is the file and not the css rule.

On your server, find the file /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf and copy its entire contents into the box. The install script will do its thing and it should give you a new config that you then need to copy back into /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf
If you're talking about YAGA reactions I can help you with that, but without sample code that may be hard. The problem you described sounds like the response content-type is set wrongly (text/plain instead of text/html).
