'Could not open socket'

I have upgraded Vanilla from 1.1.5a to 1.1.9, via all intermediate stages.
The membership application process now fails, giving a blank page with the above error message.
Everything else seems to work OK.
What might be the problem, please?

    Problem solved; my firewall was blocking the call from the webserver to Recaptcha!
