Question about Vanilla 2!

Back in Vanilla 1, I figured out how the cookie and sessions were set and used that information to allow the user to login from outside the forum. Now in Vanilla 2, how are they set? I did a simple print_r() of both the session and cookie super global variables, and just found a unique ID cookie that Vanilla created. Does it have to do the MySQL tables?
