joomla / vanilla

any bridge to vanilla ?

Comments

  • I don't think that there is any bridges at the moment what so ever. A question though, I have tried Mambo but it wasn't fully standards compliant, it heavily relied on tables in it's layout. Is the same tru for Joomla?
  • Wait until next version of Vanilla where bridges will be alot easier to create.
  • There's nothing "standards incompliant" about using tables for layout. The HTML 4.01 Spec says "Tables should not be used purely as a means to layout document content as this may present problems when rendering to non-visual media."

Note the word "should", rather than "must".

Layout tables tend to be unsemantic, and therefore inaccessable, but there are circumstances where this is not the case. Also, the definition of "tabular data" (what tables are supposed to contain) is extremely vague. The rule needs to be applied on a case-by-case basis with all factors carefully considered.

Of course, none of this applies to Mambo 4 (aka Joomla 1), whose code is absolutely terrible. Merely changing table tags to divs, however, isn't going to accomplish anything; it needs to be a full semantic redesign. This Mambo/Joomla bullshit is just distracting from this goal.
  • Site layout is not tabular data, thusly it's not ment to be used for that. CSS is supposed to control the visual style of the site, that is standard compliance.
  • Site layout is not tabular data,
Depends on the site, really. A list of forum threads and related metadata could be considered tabular data; so could a calendar. Really, anything that comes out of a database (including site content) could be called tabular data.
CSS is supposed to control the visual style of the site.
    I completely agree.
    that is standard compliance
    No, it is not.

"Standard Compliance" is complying with the standard, and the standard specifically does *not* prohibit layout tables. It strongly recommends against them, and I agree with it on that point, but it leaves enough wiggle room that a table-based site can still be considered "standard compliant".

I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here; I agree that CSS layouts are more accessible, easier to maintain, and create a useful division between style and content. I just think that focusing on words like "standards compliant" makes it seem like web design is just the mechanical process of replacing table tags with divs.
  • thanks
  • hi guys, does anyone know when the next version of vanilla will be released? i am desperately wanting to use it for v2 our of joomla community portal (joomlatips.com) and need to decide whether vanilla is an option. i really hope so, as i love vanillas different approach and it fits in nicely with what we have planned for the new version. also, is there any info available that we could use for third party integration? at this stage i would be happy with just the user system to be linked (using joomla as the primary engine). any ideas/comments would be much appreciated! chris
  • As I not so long ago got slapped around with a large trout for ... "when it's ready" is the official position.
  • last i heard, it was supposed to be out during winter break.... i'm kinda dissapointed
  • if only swell could be released soon. :-)

I'm very disappointed that it's not finished yet, and I'm the main developer. I just haven't had time to work on it. Too much money-earning work to be done and I haven't had time to do this no-money work. Priorities, right? I want it to be finished very soon, and I can guarantee that it will be released within three months. That's right. GUARANTEED. As for external integration, check this out: http://lussumo.com/swell/42/Data-Objects-External-Application-Integration/
