Summify plugin - Please have a look and share your thoughts

edited April 2010 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8
Hello! I've created a new plugin for Vanilla Forums called "Summify."

Summify (http://summify.com) enhances external links with contextual summaries. When you hover over a link and wait for about a second, a summary of the target web page pops up. If the target page is a picture or an YouTube video you can see it directly. It keeps the users on your website because they don't need to leave in order to check some external link.

We tried it on a local (Romanian) SMF forum (http://infoarena.ro/forum/) and it increased the average time spent on site with about 30 seconds.

You can see how it works on our blog http://blog.summify.com, (look for the magnifier icons next to links) or on any other website from this showcase (http://summify.com/showcase).

You can download the plugin from here: (Make sure you follow the instructions!)
http://vanillaforums.org/addon/551/summify (For VF 1.x)
http://vanillaforums.org/addon/552/summify (For VF 2.x)

The Summify service is rather new, it has some rough edges. We're still unsure how to evolve it and we'd really appreciate your thoughts on it. If you are installing it, let us know how it's working.

If you'd rather not install it, please let us know why and how we can improve it. Thanks!

Anyone interested in this type of plugin?

    Interesting idea.

My first reaction was, "OMG its like those HORRIBLE in-text advertising services" (like http://www.kontera.com/ and you can see it on Daily Tech with AdBlock off). I think a different default style would go some way to stopping that initial horror - it just looks so similar right now.

I wonder if it works with URL shortening services? That would certainly add some value.

@[-Stash-] It doesn't work completely yet with URL shortening services. Sure it follows the redirects but it doesn't do that before deciding which kind of preview to show.
