Wordpress - removing the 'category' slug?

Sorry to post here about this, but I can't get any answers on the Wordpress forum, and know that some of you here must be using WP as well. (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/41363) I've been trying to remove the 'category' slug that is added to the permalink's of posts into a certain category. It's hard. The closest I've come yet is to rename the category slug to "../" which means in FF you don't see any category prefix. So www.website.com/category/news becomes www.website.com/news However in IE the url shows up as www.website.com//news which is not good. Does anyone know of a hack/extension to achieve this?
