upgrading pre-RC1 to RC3

i'm having problems upgrading my pre-RC1 vanilla 2 to the latest RC3. i've created an issue on git hub describing the problem: http://github.com/vanillaforums/Garden/issues#issue/430.
in short, i'm getting database errors. is their an easier way to upgrade the schemas that have changed without having to navigate to a URL that never seems to work for me?
ideally, i would like to backup my db, wipe out the old vanilla 2, install the latest rc3 and then migrate my db into the new install. any ideas?
