Anonymous Posting in Vanilla 2

edited July 2010 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8
I'm really excited to see Vanilla 2 about to be released, I am really loving it! Quick question though...I am launching a new intranet site at my company and want to use V2 as the forum solution but I need it to support fully anonymous posting if the user chooses. I do not want anything to get in the way of forum adoption and my co-workers hate registering for things.

I noticed some anon posting addons for V1, but none for V2. Was this built in somewhere and if so where can I set this up? If not, is it on the roadmap?

Thank you,
Chad

  • Anyone?
  • Sorry if I missed an obvious answer but I would really appreciate a quick response from someone in the know. Not sure why I haven't been able to get an answer to this - I assumed it would be fairly straight forward.

We have avoided anonymous posting for the time being because we don't have any "true" spam control in the core yet. It's definitely something we are interested in working on - allowing non-registered members to do everything from "liking" a discussion to actually commenting on one. But it is not on any roadmap at the moment.
  • Thanks Mark for taking a moment to respond!

That is disappointing however -- and I hope it makes it into a future release (somewhere in the 2.0 scope). Would be a nice option for internal forums like I'm building where spam control isn't necessary at all.

Either way, great work on a solid 2.0 release. I'll likely deploy Vanilla on some public forum solutions in the near future.
  • V2 looks like a very appealing choice among the many forum options out there. Great job!

I'd like to suggest that anonymous posting receive some priority -- as an optional feature, of course -- as it is pretty essential, in my opinion, for a dynamic community, particularly one that is support-oriented.

I'm a bit disappointed that it's not on the roadmap, though delighted that you have a roadmap, as opposed to some other options out there.

I won't ask "would it be possible" but "how hard would it be" to add recording of IP addresses/subnets so you can effectively block spammers that way, that is, if you were so inclined to actually want to have a spam blocking feature built into the core.

Or perhaps a simple math based captcha (4 +-/x 3 = "textbox") for each new discussion or reply (if they're not an admin ;P)
