Categories as images in Vanilla 2

Is there any way to use images instead of text for categories in Vanilla 2 without using a plugin? How do you do it?

    Without a plugin? Guess you need to hardcode it by modifying the discussion page and create the categories sidepanel from hand, using img-tags...

    yeah, maybe a plugin is better. There was one for Vanilla 1. I hope it will be updated
