    And then that would get one thinking about "groups", basically categories within a forum that only certain users can access.

    been there, navitron. It was a long time ago but i had mentioned it. And i would still like it. Problem is, to make it work you'd need to either completely rewrite or recreate the whisper system. Which is a lot of work... Groups, i believe, are in some way part of the next rev - you'll be able to make categories only certain roles can access. Next step is to allow users to be part of multiple roles.
