Can Vanilla set up a new user as a 'banned' role as a default so that the user has to be 'approved' before being allowed access to a category?

I don't want new users to access some categories until they are approved by a moderator.

Can Vanilla send an email to the moderator to advise when a new user has signed up?

    You can set up your registration to approval and then change the permissions on the applicant role.
    1. Go to Dashboard/Registration to choose your registration method.
    2. Go to Dashboard/Roles and Permissions and edit the Applicant role.
