This would be perfect for Vanilla if someone can turn it into a plugin:

commercial demo: http://www.cometchat.com/

EDIT: dumb me, didn't see the link

Why not go for an open-source variant which provides, more or less, the same functionality?
    See http://anantgarg.com/2009/05/13/gmail-facebook-style-jquery-chat/ .

a, sorry... I only saw the Comet Chat link there. Maybe I should go to sleep at some point ... Anyway, it seems like a great idea, that I strongly support. Unfortunately, I have quite a bit on my plate right now and am unable to help you with development.

What I can do is I can provide a test bed for this, as soon as it is out.

I have very, i repeat VERY little knowledge of writing plugins, so if anyone would give me a push in the right direction on where to start it would help ALOT.

BTW, I would also like to suggest http://www.ajaxim.com

I have something planned with the devs for when they make the following/friends system which they are working on. My chat will integrate with the friends plugin allow a facebook-esque system. However cannot put a timeline on this as i have no idea when they will be writing the friends plugin.

@garymardell In the meantime could you release the plugin just for all online members of a Vanilla site?

cometchat doesnt appear to be opensource, i would prefer ajaxim

@bobtheman ajaxIM is open source, but so is what Raize suggested - but apparently it's also what cometchat is based on. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yea, cometchat is a commercial application of an open source chat app

Actually ajaxIM could very well be based on the same code, as they look pretty similar.

@Raize Didn't actually realize it, but they do look similar (in their own way). Any success in integrating AjaxIM?

Hi I did look at building a plugin, but the note on the site says: "This chat script can be used for free under GPL-style license for non-commercial purposes. For commercial purposes, please purchase a license." In this sense it would be difficult to make a plugin. It would have to be from "scratch" as there would be no way to control how the add-on was used. I will look around for other options...

BTW, couldn't you release the plugin with a disclaimer and a link to the website where you purchase a license?
