Where can I find the php for the mailing part?

I'm having trouble with the default mailing mechanism, and wanted to see the php behind it. Anyone know where i can find it?

    Ahh apparently I need PHPMailer installed.

    [edit] but i see that it is included.. hm. I'm on ubuntu 8.04 server and nginx btw.
