Why does vanilla forums make outbound connections to 67.23.13.227 ?

  • It's normal behaviour for software to do that. It allows for checking for updates to the application and plugins.
  • No it isn't, not when you hide the fact it's going on and have no option to disable it. That's spyware.
  • Don't use it.
  • If you think it is personal information for others to know that you own a computer then I have bad news for you, we now all know you do since you are talking to us.

    The information isn't hidden and the code is freely available for you to look at to see exactly why it is doing that. There is nothing nefarious happening here.

    If people are seriously bothered by this, we are happy to accept code contributions to optionally switch off this feature.
  • Not spyware as this was announced in the release notes for one of the 2.0.x releases.
    If you dont want this to happen go through the code and make the changes to stop it.
    The code is open source so have fun.
