Plugin for Vanilla: Email digest for posts

I posted on topic once but thought formally ask the community if someone might take at shot at developing a Vanilla plugin that allows users to configure email notifications for new posts to a forum. The idea is to emulate a digest capability seen in some other forum engine such as Google Groups. We moved from Google Groups to a WordPress hosted solution and that feature is now not available. Needless to say I'm dealing with some unhappy campers. Users (sigh).

    This is a tricky one, because it requires setting up a cron to run the notifications.

    We would love it if it was easier than that and could be bundled in the core, but we don't know of any other solution right now.

    BuddyPress has this feature. I wonder how they implemented it.
