Remove email requirement (disable entirely)

Is there a simple way to apply a cheap hack/patch (even commenting out lines here and there) to where email is no longer a requirement for signing up on the forum? Also, removing email notifications? Maybe even removing any email functionality entirely?

    You'd need to go hunting for the code. Its fairly spread out in the UserModel and various preference panes etc. Good luck :p
