Non-default theme bonk

when changing themes from default, the site errors out. the uncovered message:
Fatal Error in PHP.trigger_error();
Smarty error: [in /var/vhosts/pymapper.com/html/themes/light-grunge/views/default.master.tpl line 11]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'var' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 590)
cache/* is set to 777. If it matters any, the default installed themes screenshots are all broken.
BRAND NEW install. I've searched the forum but the closest fixes were all permissions things and didn't work. so of course i get a unique (as in never happened before) showstopper of a problem.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

I Completely forgot that I had tried Vanilla once before.
So now, 3 years later, I try it again and have the same problem in a completely different hardware and OS.
Clearly some kind of config issue. Did I miss some explicit setup instructions somewhere?
Very disheartening.
It seems there is a tag that is wrong in the theme so maybe you should try a different theme and see if the same thing happens or fix the problem that the theme has. Welcome back

I’ve done this: https://www.google.de/search?q=syntax+error:+unrecognized+tag+'var'+(Smarty_Compiler.class.php,+line+590
and got that: http://www.smarty.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18516&view=next&sid=f375f18eb3d65ab3434c80df5b866d66
Best guess seems to be that you use JavaScript in your .tpl without using {literal} js code {/literal}
My mistake. . . i'm having the same result, but I'm sure the problem is different. New post coming.
what version of vanilla?
re-install the core source and see what happens.
I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.
