Idea for Feeds

Well, at several Topics within this forums it is mentioned that RSS is the future of staying informed about whats going on, also in forums. So what about enhancing the feed with kinda info about the latest postings? At the moment I can only see the list of latest topics. But even if it is sorted by datetime, I can not really see if there is a _new_ postings after my last visit. Maybe you should implement something like the time of the latest posting or the number of postings or something... For example: atm it is just like this: "latest modified topic 1" "latest modified topic 2" "and so on" but what about: "[12:23] latest modified topic 1 [4]" "[12:03] latest modified topic 2 [2]" "and so on [17]" <- no time because the latest posting was not today ? This would be really more useful, especially when adding a rss bookmark within firefox like i do :-)

  • i've found the feed off the disussions tab of no use because it just lists the sticky topics or am i doing something wrong here?
  • uhm... for me it just lists every the last x topics, sorted by date. no matter if sticky or not.
  • yeah same here but on my feeds i like to have it set to show me the last 3 articles posted. so with this forum i just get 3 stickies so it doesn't really work so well.
  • ahh... you mean it shows it in the way the forum looks like and not by real post date?
  • Hijack: I have an idea for a feed extension (I don't know if this has already been mentioned). I have seen hints that V.1 will have feeds for individual categories, but how about for individual users? This would allow people to advertise their own feed in an external context, or possibly use the forum as a kind of simple blogging software entirely. Possible? Easy to implement? Anyone else like this feature?
  • I believe you can make feeds of searches. SO i guess you could do a namewhore search and run the feed from that. I'm not sure though.
  • Do you really think people would use all sorts of random feeds?

    Why not?

I'm open to ideas for changing up the feeds. They're just extensions anyway, so we can easily change them after the 1 comes out.
  • Feeds for everything I say. Vanilla should keep its userbility open rather than closed
  • Search-based feeds (and searches in general) are still not sortable, right?

That's something that bugs me, but I the testing I did showed that as soon as you added a sort to the results, they got over 10 times slower. On a big forum with hundreds of thousands of posts where an unsorted search is pretty slow, the sorted one would cause a timeout. I played with indexes and all kinds of other methods, but there was nothing I could do to make it faster. This was definitely a place where MySQL fell short and one of the reasons I really want to do a postgre port to see if it can do some of these tasks faster/better.
  • Yeah, because otherwise, the search feed just has the 15 oldest records, which never change, making the feed pretty much useless.

Well, that was only the case on the comment search. And... For better or worse, I just added a DateCreated desc sort on the comment search results.
