Macworld Keynote 2006

edited February 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Only 8 more hours to go!

I think we might certainly hear about Intel iBooks or Mac Minis, but they sure as hell won't be shipping before March.

  • How can you be so sure that they won't be shipping them before March?

What I'm excited is that Apple might be introducing a new Mac OS X version for the x86 platform.

Call it a hunch. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Well, they did that six months ago, but yeah it'll finally be out of beta when the first x86 macs ship.
  • I'm looking forward to that OSX version too. Have they said they'll release it for all and sundry to install or is it just for their hardware still? I'm assuming the latter.

They're specifically taking action to prevent non mac owners from installing it.

I fail to see how the "OSX for everyone" plan benefits Apple at all. Clearly, they take the same view.
  • Official word from Apple is that they "will not make not make OS X for any other computer than Apple manufactured"

Which basically is that there isn't going to be an official Mac OS X for PCs, just for Macs. But mark my words, there is definedly going to be some sort of port out in 6months tops.
  • So long as they don't announce a new iMac then I'll be happy ;-D

It just makes the OS easier to make really doesn't it? They don't have to cater for some many different combinations of hardware/setups as Microsoft do. If they were to make it available for everyone I'm sure they'd soon see the same sort of problems as Microsoft do now.

I'd still like to try it though

    On with the piracy :D
  • Well, Apple has supposedly said that they are going to introduce Intel versions of iMac, PowerBook, iBook and MacMini in the first four months of this year. Intel is supposedly making the Power Mac version, so you never know what will happen and how fast.
  • More on TiVo for Mac? http://www.tivoblog.com/archives/2006/01/07/tivotogo-for-the-mac-is-for-real/
  • Does TiVo work in the UK? What does it run on... cable?
  • Tivo used to be in the UK but I don't know what's happened in the last couple of years.

Oh, the hardware protection will be broken, probably within a month of the DVD image leaking, but there will not be a legal copy of OS X for non-Apple machines.

    EDIT: Two minutes :D
  • Yeay. Keynote starting soon. I personally would like to see iLife 06 (with Front Row) and iWork 06 (with Numbers and much improved Pages) and a media Mac Mini.

Mac OS X x86 seems to run surprisingly well on standard x86 computers though. It'll be interesting to see if they can crack the final release, and if the updates will work after that. It wouldn't surprise me if Apple has some plan to make sure that just geeks have the capability to run Mac OS X x86 on any PC, so that they'll drive adoption.

Maybe they've redesigned Front Row to actually make it useful? (I've only used it twice in a month so far... maybe if i could turn off my mac using the remote... or browse playlists in itunes...)
  • "9:16 am Announcing a new accessory for the iPod. a remote control with FM Tuner."

    Heh, sucks to be Griffin...

    Fixed your link, lookhere :)
  • Thanks : ) but I had just fixed it too and then saw it change again! I thought there was a ghost playing tricks on me. Took me a while, third attempt, to get it right!
  • Yay for new widgets! I think.
