Seriously pissed off now - how do i enable "My Bookmarks" ?!

edited February 2011 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8
So just the other week my girlfriend said 'wouldn't it be great if we could bookmark discussions in Vanilla' to which i agreed, then couldn't find any Addons for that here on the site, so kinda forgot about it, i guessed it was not possible yet, i'll wait for that.

...until last night, when i was browsing Themes, i realised everyone seemed to have a "My Bookmarks" tab above the discussions, in their Theme screenshots....

I can't find how to do this ANYWHERE - i've been searching my Dashboard, Applications, Plugins, ... searched Addons here at VanillaForums.org.... searched the Questions/posts here...nothing..nada...so before i throw my monitor out of the window in rage lol, anyone care to enlighten me?

thank you!

What theme are you using? You should see your bookmarks in your side panel if nothing else.
  • It only appears if you have something bookmarked.
  • then how do i bookmark something?
  • Click on the star next to a discussion.
  • it might not be a star if you have the voting plugin installed or a theme that changes it. i, for instance, use a speech balloon icon on mine.

It took me a long time before I realised those stars are the bookmark toggles. It is not obvious, and it needs to provide more guidance IMO. Not having title text behind the star to tell people what the star is, what the current state is, and what will happen if you click on it, is a usability flaw. The fact that only a subtle colour change gives any indication of the current state (and then it is your guess as to what colour means what) is a bit of an accessibility problem.

Yes, things can be made simple in Vanilla, but going to the level where you have to already know something in order to know that there is something there that does something, is probably taking it too far ;-)

Oh, and yeah, I know everyone else is doing it this way, but I still don't think it is helpful. Google uses a colour change, and no rollover title. The BBC has the title "add to favourites" on their iPlayer site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/).
  • maybe a change in icon? like a tag/bookmark looking icon instead of a star would help? or maybe instead of calling it 'bookmarked' we can call it 'starred'?

there is a bit of a UI disconnect there, I agree.

There is a title when you hover the star. It says either "Bookmark" or "Unbookmark" depending on the state.

Yes, it says "Bookmark", but still does not indicate what the state is or what clicking on it does. Sometimes the action is to add the discussion to your bookmarks, and sometimes the action is to remove the discussion from your bookmarks.

Edit: actually, it says "bookmark" and "unbookmark" now on this site. I guess that has been fixed since the last version I downloaded :-)

As far as I know it's been bookmark/unbookmark since 2.0.

    And even before :)
  • Yeah, it just didn't seem to work for me. But now it does. Everywhere. All the time.

If I don't like the text, then I can always change it in the translations files.

Well, I guess I can unbookmark this discussion now ;)
