Private forums with Embed?

Is it possible to have private forums set up using the wordpress plugin / embed feature? Could one just protect the page that the forum is embeded on, or is there functionality within vanilla that allows private forums? I see that in the role settings a guest can not create a post, but can you stop them from having any access?

    I thought that I would share an answer to this question that I got, in case others were searching for this also.

    There is a private community plugin which I hadn't found:
    http://vanillaforums.org/addon/privatecommunity-plugin

    Protecting the page that the forum is on will protect the page, but if someone was able to get the url of the vanilla forum, they would be able to navigate directly to the forum.
