Update profile when space in username

OK - we got our ProxyConnect sso working with Joomla. But is has used the full name for the username. When you go to update your profile you get a "Username can only contain letters, numbers, underscores, and must be between 3 and 20 characters long." error and the user is unable to update the account.
Is there a simple way around this?

BTW - running the newest version of Vanilla.

    I guess a better question would be, in what file is the configuration for checking usernames? I would like to just turn that off since the user will really not have the ability to change password or modify the majority of their account. Only gender...
