Pretty good hosting deal

edited January 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Saw this on Daring Fireball...

It's a pretty big initial investment ($500), but you never have to pay for hosting ever again (as long as you stay below 20gb a month, and extra traffic seems pretty cheap), and they throw in a decent backup.

I'm not familiar with the company, but they seem ok, and i think a few people on here were looking for hosting plans. It's a little out of my price range, but it is tempting...

  • asmallorange.com was running a similar offer (might still be). I guess its a new thing some hosts are doing to get some quick cache to upgrade servers and such.
  • I figured it would be some shady company when I read your description, but TextDrive hosts A List Apart so I trust them. Thanks for the link man.
  • That's cool and tempting. I know they are a really solid host.

Not sure what to make of it, though. I can pay around $90 a year for some awesome hosting at Site5 with just as many features. I'd have to use this account for 5 years to jusfity the expenses, and if was a decent sized site, I'd end up paying extra fees for traffic and such.
  • Very tempting indeed, however, this offer is only good for "as long as they exist" in that case, I hope they're good for at least another decade.

I think if they're around for two more years, you'd probably still come out ahead on the hosting alone by their prices.
  • Like I said, you can get equal or better service at Site5 and other hosts for cheaper - around $90 a year.
  • only hitch is that 20gb cap on traffic, seems a bit lame but reasonable for small sites.
  • Lech, make your sites light and you can support easily 10-20k unique visitors per month :D

TextDrive is one of the best hosts out there.
  • Well, for "light" content as you say, that's a breeze. Not so great for moving files and such however :/
  • I think that is the point. No cheap file sharing space, since they already offer a solution for that.
  • true.
  • They ask 2.50 per month to add another domain.

2.50/month for additional domains? *ouch* Also try reading this: http://forum.textdrive.com/viewtopic.php?id=8371 and then see if you really want hosting from a company with admins that behave like that....
  • That's just not on in a normal forum. In a support forum however that's just beyond words. Lets hope they remove admin rights from that person.
  • I believe that is a support employee ie. a server administrator and not a forum administrator......
  • That's even worse.
  • Woaaaahhhh crazy evil thread going on there

oink oink. Wow, there's no way I'd want someone that immature to handle my server. :-\
  • Jason Hoffman aka. jason on the forums, is an complete ass all the way, but he knows his stuff.

I hate that kind of guy as much as the next man, but even if my personal views differ from his, that doesn't mean anything in corporate world. I bet there are hundreds of people working at Apple who are just complete bitches and eat babies, but I still think Apple is a super company and I'm proud to use their products.

And since we are here, I can say to you that I'm not a people person, I just hate people, especially retard customers who can't think logically and call here to ask stupid questions. But I'm not a sales person, nor do I answer the phones so it doesn't matter, I'm good at what I do, and that is all that matters.
  • That's the difference though, if you're the public face then you have to be polite no matter what.
