Starting a part-time business... what would you do?

I've been watching a program on TV where a financial guru tries to help various people pay off their entire mortage in 2 years, by helping them save money, invest it, start businesses, and generally scrimping & saving. Sounds crazy but some of them do quite well! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4584070.stm) Anyhow it made me think how I could earn some money in my free time, probably something web based I think, but not sure what... what would you do? (No need to answer this one Mark ;-)

  • I'd best get on UKNova and check this out.
  • It's on at the moment, Thursday nights I think, also a book as well: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0563522844/203-5824227-5142340
  • Cheers mate. This is something I'm very interested in. I'm aiming to get on the property ladder this year.
  • Ah-ha. I've been thinking about it also, but being skint and gormless it's gonna be tricky. I can't afford to buy in the area that I live at either so might require some sacrifices, and might have to be put off a few more years yet. Anyhow, yeah, saw the program and it made me sit up and think about it. The interest alone that you repay over 25 years is phenonemal...
  • Obviously it depends entirely on circumstances, but dont be *too* taken in by the concept of paying back a mortgage in 2 years. It might seem like a good idea but even if interest repayments seem insane it's quite plausible that realistically it's a better way round of doing it.
  • 3stripe, to answer your question, I would set up something of an online ASP software solution, such as mailing list management, online dating website (for a niche ... like orphaned dwarfs in the UK), web hosting or something like that. Your success will all come down to how well you market yourself.

Well UK folks - I'm about to step onto the property ladder image

Had an offer accepted on a 2 bedroom flat in Glasgow yesterday - no more rent down the drain for me!

But... I need to think about making some money again... so if anyone needs any freelance design of any kind done, you know who to call ;-)
  • "no more rent down the drain for me!"

Now you get to enter the wonderful world of "Mortgage Interest Down The Drain".

True true. But it's not quite so bad
  • Haha. Atleast mortgage interest secures your hold on a (hopefully appreciating...then again in glasgae perhaps not :P) property which is what it's all about. Funnily enough i could do with some design work doing for a game server management console i'm thinking of making...but I wasnt really planning on paying for it :( Course if you're interested you're welcome to give me a shout though :P I could offer hosting or something in return until i start making millions? :D

Sounds good. I'm not really in a position to do any freebies though at the moment, sorry. Going to ignore that comment about glasgae thank you very much :) I have put together a {very quick} portfolio overview at http://www.3stripe.net/portfolio for anyone who's interested though, these are some personal projects I've worked on recently.
