Cannot activate plugin (Wordpress)

Decided to give Vanilla a try, but got stopped in my tracks when activating the plugin! Getting this error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '{' in wp-content/plugins/vanilla-forums/functions.php on line 61

Is anyone familiar with this error, or have any suggestions for troubleshooting? Running Wordpress 3.1.1
