I invite everyone to try out the latest release candidate of PC-BSD. http://www.pcbsd.org/ I'm really enthousiastic about the new packages they invented. For someone that can't afford a lot of time to deal with broken dependencies and getting programs to work, this might be the new revolution in open source distro land. I've tried it myself and must say I'm very pleased. Unfortunately there aren't many packages right now, but this will improve over time I'm sure.

    I'm fairly new to the concept of BSD, I haven't ever used one and don't really know anything about it.

    Can you enlighten me?

    How does it compare to Linux for example?

    What are it's strong points?

    I mainly use my Linux box for server purposes, could I do that with BSD?

    The great thing for me was I could have it running and installing things without knowing anything about it. So I could learn in my free time and not first having to learn how to get all things done. If I can have this running, anyone can.     Ah, FreeBSD is great, I hope PC-BSD can bring it to home users. But it should put more effort into making a good user interface. I think both KDE and Gnome is awful, and so is most other Window Managers out there. But perhaps it's just because I'm a Mac addict, and most WM use the MS Windows Window model, or some funky weird *nix-only model.

    With Cairo and Qt4, hopefully KDE and Gnome will see great improvements in 2006. It seems that PC-BSD is just a repackageing of FreeBSD, but I guess that focus on being easy to install and use for beginners is a good thing. I'll keep my Ubuntu install still, but I'll have a look.

    At the moment, I'm quite content with gentoo. The next format go-around I'll perhaps have a stab at it. Also, I'm not so much a fan of KDE, I'd rather settle for running XFCE which is nicer for slower systems. :/ bugger.

    gethegrace: The quality of the skins is the *least* of their problems, and that one still looks pretty glitchy.

    Skyfex, amen, the only good window manager for linux was blackbox "very old version from back in the days" and everything after that has been just confusing blabber (mostly why I stopped using linux and hating it).

    I'm using Gentoo Linux myself and I love it http://www.gentoo.com :) . Regarding the window managers I prefer the light ones like Ion3 or Ratpoison that are very useful and efficient as they can be controlled using the keyboard only.
