Making a copy of existing vanilla installation for development purposes.

Hi,
I want to upgrade to the current version but all my previous upgrades broke vanilla and I had to reinstall every time. This is why I would like to make a copy of my current forum on a subdomain where I can play without breaking anything. I created a subdomain, copied the files, changed the conf.php to point to a new database which was populated with a backup from the original db, but I get this:
Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/cip6791/public_html/ro/applications/controllers/class.controller.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/cip6791/public_html/ro/library/core/class.dispatcher.php on line 531
