Popular Tab Algorithm

A few questions:

• What calculation does the Popular tab used to show post order?
• Is there a supported configuration option to adjust/introduce an aging mechanic such that a popular post would incur a penalty for each day that passed since it was created?
• If such a configuration option does not exist, can you provide details on what would be required to override this on a custom installation?

These questions spawn from noting the Popular tab on the Vanilla forums has some posts that are over a year old or whose recent activity are months ago. In terms of a content freshness standpoint for a forum, this is pretty stale. In our use-case, we want to promote popular posts but we also don't want a few really popular posts to monopolize the top spots in that tab for long periods of time.

Popular seems only to be sorted by number of views of the discussion.
