How to change comments on discussion page?

Hi all,

I'm trying to change the discussion page a bit. I want to display the avatars of the users that left a comment and when clicked the comment is displayed. I'm not sure how to get the avatars and comments. I have a development installation here

Any advice or code examples would be great.
