Determining country and cheating it?

edited February 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I have wondered, how do some scripts find out the country settings of the visitor. For example, some sites fetch your country info and then they present the language of the visitor, and then there are many japanese sites that restrict the bandwith to japanese visitors only. How can I cheat the script so I can access the sites?

  • Any of these work? http://del.icio.us/search/?all=anonymous+browsing
  • there are a couple of ways to find out. one, your browser sends Accept-Language and/or Accept-Charset headers in HTTP requests, which contain lists of language and character set abbreviations in order of your preference.

also there are databases around like GeoIP that match IP addresses to geographical locations.
  • oh and as far as restricting bandwidth to japanese users or whatever, they're probably using GeoIP or something similar, so you'd have to use a proxy in Japan to get around it.
  • ha ha just noticed my reply is totally stupid
