setting up

edited February 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I guess I'm having problems getting this to be viewable in my web-browser, I am setting this up on a headless server with no gui, but I can get it to be viewable using apache 1.3x. I'm on a Debian Stable using and Unstable version of MySQL 5.0.18. Could someone please advise on what to do, and explain why this information is not in the directions.

We're going to need more information than that in order to help you. What version of Vanilla are you trying to set up? What file are you having problems with? If you are getting any errors, what are they?
  • I am using VAnilla 0.9.6.2, I just can't view ANY files in the browser, and I am getting no errrors. As far as I know.

So you haven't even run the installer yet?
What version of PHP do you have?
  • the installer?? you mean installer.php? i'm not sure what install file your talking about, I ran the database.sql file...and mysql is setup...what else do I need to do? and I have php4 with apache 1.33

If you're on 9.2.6 you needn't have run the database.sql file. If you browse to installer.php it should run you through a script to setup your forum for you.
  • really? I guess I misread the directions. I will try that now.
  • Ok, i found out that I had ipchains installed, but i uninstalled that when i setup the system. Removed that, but i still can't view the installer.php, i am trying to connect to http://ip.ip.ip.ip/vanilla/installer.php what could i be doing wrong?
  • I'm not sure what ipchains is or what it has to do with this? I'm assuming ofcourse that you have other php scripts running successfully on your server and that any necessary configuration (not a great deal but php atleast needs to be executable) is applied to the vanilla directory?
Have you set up all your permissions properly?
  • Yes, ipchains is a software firewall on linux. the vanilla dir under /var/www is set to 777. the installer file is set to 777 currently. anything else?
  • Oh yeah sorry. So do you have any other php scripts running?
  • None, also apache is asking me to save the installer.php file.
  • Um. Definately sounds like a server issue.
  • Ok. Any reccomendations? i'm not sure what else to do from here.
  • Who's your host? I'd suggest you recommend some sort of re-config.
  • I'm hosting this myself....
  • Uh..huh. Recompile apache? Did you compile it yourself or apt-get it?
  • apt-get :-D
  • sudo apt-get update *
  • http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html this will save you a lot of headaches.
