[Documentation] how to translate text in vanilla forum*

Hi,

how can i fix the text in the vanilla forums such as "Howdy Stranger" and "All discussions"?
Also, I would like to have the category description under each category. I see the input for this in the admin dashboard but it's not appearing in the actual forums.

Please help asap.

Create your own locale like 'en-custom' and substitute the strings. Example:

$Definition['Howdy, Stranger!'] = 'Welcome to this forum';

as far as i know, the category description is displayed when you click on the categories link in the sidebar. You can see it here by clicking on the categories link(in bold) in the sidebar.

so if i wanted to have a forum like this http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/index.jsp
how can I do that? Which file would I have to edit? Or is this native to vanilla forums and I can't edit without plugin?
