Can I delete applicants WITHOUT replying to them?

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but the search facility is not providing any results.
I have currently set applicants to be approved by Admin, which, afaIk, sends them an email approving or declining.
I was getting spam sign-up, and just declining them, but I realised that I was effectively advertising a live email address to the sort of people who probably shouldn't have it.
Is there any other way to delete applicants?
