Move discussion button module to content div

I need to figure out how to put the Start a New Discussion button module in the content div instead of the panel div. I see that the location is specified in the NewDiscussionModule::AssetTarget() function. How can I override this in a plugin? I can't seem to think of any way to do it short of modifying the core code, and I don't want to do that. Thanks.
