Disabling Directory Listing on Forum

Hi, I have a forum running Vanilla 2.0.18.1 hosted on a Bluehost shared server. I discovered that one can browse the subdirectories of the forum (eg. www.mysite.net/uploads/) and Apache gives an Index of all files and subdirectories. I have tried placing a .htaccess file with Options -Indexes in the uploads directory but this also blocks all the files from being displayed (user pictures, for example) on the forum. Just wondering if anyone knows the solution to my problem, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    just add blank index.php to those folders ( ensure one doesnt already exist )
