Mobile Theme Performance

I'm looking at improving the overall performance for mobile users, and i think disabling the notifier ajax calls would help with users of dinosaur phones (like black berry)

Any suggestions on how to do this in the theme?

the question is really more general than that. I just provided the context of why i would want to do this.

I'm really just trying to figure out how to control whether the notifier ajax scripts run via a them file change.
