Can users, when signing up, choose their group?

Hi,
I've vanilla 2.0.18.1 and i was wondering if users can choose a group upon their request for signup?
The groups i have in my mind is custom created by me.
How can i customize vanilla in that way?

create custom roles,

create plugin that add field to registration form, render that extra options in drop down menu foirm (for example),,. handle input from that extra field.
