Is there a way to allow multiple registrations with the same email address?

I'm opening a roleplay community and people like to have an account per character, often but it seems you can't register more than one account with the same email address, making this prohibitive for most members, is there a way to change the setting?

i believe the e-mail address is considered a key field in the database, so i don't think you can do that without some alteration to the core.
