Moving forum to new server

I've recently had to move servers from from (mt) to textdrive, and I'm having problems getting my vanilla forum back up and running. I've uploaded all my files, and imported the database back in, using the same database details (although note that the files I uploaded into the vanilla forum, weren't ones that were changed in the original installation). However, just doing that gives me a blank page. I've tried running the installation again, but it doesn't let me finish it when I already have the database setup. Deleting all the tables from the database, and then running the installation, gets a working version of vanilla, but then I can't import my database backup over the top. I've looked at the manual install, and entering the database details manually - but I'm at a loss when it comes to running the command line stuff. any help would be appreciated.

When I had a similar issue. What I did was a fresh installation and let that complete.

When that had completed I wiped the database and reimported the old info. I had a couple of issues to fix that were purely on the location of Vanilla but apart from that it was fine.

I'm not sure if that's what you did or not.

thanks. finally got it back on. did what you said, and it didn't work entirely, but with a few changes in procedure I got it up. I wiped the database tables clean, uploaded the database.sql file, with the backup sql file pasted in over the top ran the installation, but didn't complete step 3 pasted the backup sql into myphpadmin, thereby importing all the data into the tables. then wollah, forum back-up. Just had to change a few of the application settings in the settings panel, and it's back as it was before. thanks giginger

i'm also trying to move my forum to another server and having all sorts of problems. how exactly do you go about 'cleaning' a database and installing the old one over the top?

what made you decide to move from mt? has textdrive been better so far? what were you using @ mt?

(sorry for being so nosey, but I'm there now and am considering changing)

You don't need to re-install. You'd need to update conf/settings.php to point to the new paths. If you wipe the database to install from scratch (and overwrite the database from your backup), then you'll need to remove the database.php and settings.php so Vanilla can re-create them for you.
