Old Account Pictures/Avatars Not Getting Deleted

I notice when I change or delete an account picture/avatar, the old ones are still left behind under uploads/userpics.

Is there a way to get it to automatically delete the old pictures? Or do you just have to periodically delete the uploads/userpics directory manually?
